NELSON MANDELA CHILDRENS FUND (Goelama Project) and the FOUNDATION FOR DEVELOPMENT (FDC)

The Goelama project of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (NMCF) started as a pilot project in 2000. Its aim has been to improve the well-being of orphans and vulnerable children and to help build stronger links between services offered by government and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in communities were the pilot project operated. The main programme activities are intended to ensure sustainable livelihoods and households, especially in families that care for orphans and vulnerable children.

OUTPUTS:

Develop models of community support for children and their extended families, leading to:

• Improved family food security and incomes

• Expanded and integrated local government responses to OVC needs.

• Behavior changes for preventing new infections.

ACTIVITIES:

In partnership with community building and catalyst organizations (CCO):

• Conduct baseline survey, and scan the environment.

• Mobilise communities to develop programmes that respond to needs that lead to strengthened support systems for children and their families.

• Facilitate access to social and legal services.

• Facilitate access to psycho-social services.

• Partnership development / supporting CCOs

• Advocacy

FOUNDATION FOR DEVELOPMENT (FDC)



The FDC was founded by Graca Machal (wife of Mr Mandela) to provide for the needs of vulnerable communities devastated by HIV/AIDS.

The funds donated by 46664 are used in a range of projects including HIV/AIDS support services – prevention, treatment and care. The core focus is children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.
